Fall Fruits and Seasonal Color Changes at Hoyt Arboretum

​Did you know that all flowering plants produce fruits?  Fruits can be fleshy (ex. a ripe tomato) or dry (ex. hazelnut).  Join First Saturday PDX  for a fall walk through the Hoyt Arboretum with a focus on a variety of fruits from trees of Chinese origin led by Dr. Mandy Tu.  We will also look at leaf color changes as our day lengths shorten and temperatures drop.

We will go with light drizzle or sunshine.  Please dress for the weather, and wear comfortable shoes for walking on trails. The route is less than 1 mile and will include some ups and downs along the way. Most of the tour route will travel on well-graded packed dirt or gravel trails.

With its historical landscaping, Hoyt Arboretum has a collection of over 6,000 specimens with hiking and paved trails amongst them.  For more information, see Hoyt Arboretum.

This is a free event, but space is limited.

​Guided by:
Dr. Mandy Tu is the Plant Taxonomist & Herbarium Curator at the Hoyt Arboretum.  She is responsible for vouchering and verifying the identity of the trees within the arboretum, and is often asked to identify plants by natural area managers in the Portland region. She has a B.S. in Botany from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California at Davis. Dr. Tu has taught many plant identification courses and workshops for botanical professionals and plant enthusiasts.
*We will meet at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Parking Lot C (address is 2000 SW Knights Blvd) at 9:30 am 
Paid parking onsite (credit card or cash) or use the Parking Kitty app. Additional parking is available in other zoo lots. Restrooms located at the MAX station or (better/cleaner ones) at the Zoo: go through ticketing then on your right, before the walkway through ticketed entry.
