Fall Fruits and Seasonal Color Changes at Hoyt Arboretum

​More than 30,000 plant species are native to China, representing nearly one-eighth of the world's total plant species, with thousands found nowhere else on Earth. However, varieties of bamboo, ginkgo and pine are among those which have made their way to North America, each with its own cultural significance.

Did you know that all flowering plants produce fruits? Fruits can be fleshy (like a ripe tomato) or dry (like a hazelnut). In this fall walk, we will view a variety of fruits from trees of Chinese origin and look for leaf color changes as our day lengths shorten and temperatures drop.
 
 
Come prepared for a walk with comfortable shoes and for all weather.
 
Meet at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Parking Lot C (address is 2000 SW Knights Blvd) at 9:30 am (??). Paid parking onsite (credit card or cash) or use the Parking Kitty app. Additional parking is available in other zoo lots. Restrooms located at the MAX station or (better/cleaner ones) at the Zoo: go through ticketing then on your right, before the walkway through ticketed entry.


For our first program of the season join First Saturday PDX  for a tour of the living museum in Washington Park with a focus on native plants of China.  Led by Martin Nicholson, Curator of Hoyt Arboretum, our fall nature walk will also include some lesser known species - come and find out what they are!

Please dress for the weather, and wear comfortable shoes for walking on trails. The route is less than 1 mile and will include some ups and downs along the way. Most of the tour route will travel on well-graded packed dirt or gravel trails, few hills.

With its historical landscaping, Hoyt Arboretum has a collection of over 6,000 specimens with hiking and paved trails amongst them.  For more information, see Hoyt Arboretum.

This is a free event, but space is very limited.

​For those interested, there will be a no host lunch at a Chinese restaurant after the tour.
*We will meet at the Washington Park Veterans Parking Lot @ 2000 SW Knights Blvd, Portland, OR 97221 adjacent to the  Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Please note the later meeting time of 10:30am. ​
