Dim sum ( 點心) is a traditional Chinese meal made up of small plates of dumplings and other small bites, usually accompanied by tea. It is comprised of a large range of small dishes that are traditionally enjoyed in restaurants for brunch, with a selection of over 1,000 varieties of small-plate foods, usually meat, shrimp or vegetables in dough or a wrapper that is steamed, deep fried or pan-fried. Similar to the way that the Spanish eat tapas, the dishes are shared among family and friends, consumed during brunch hours. Dim sum restaurants have a unique serving method: while traversing the room, servers call out the names of the dishes they are offering to customers from steam-heated carts.
