Join First Saturday PDX for a look at the rush toward urbanization in rural Sichuan in the 1980s. With slides illustrating the countryside as she observed it, Nancy Dollahite discusses how these economic changes led to social changes in family structure. Living in Chongqing at the time, she was able to visit a wide sample of villages within a few hours of the rapidly changing city and interview the local people. She will also read from her recent book, Field Notes From Sichuan: Learning to be a Foreigner, and raise some questions about how each of us can most fruitfully encounter cultures and individuals who challenge our own deeply-held and cherished belief systems. Her book will be available for purchase at the presentation.
