​Wonders to Enjoy: Chinese Snuff Bottles

Join First Saturday PDX  for an illustrated lecture about the history and forms of Chinese snuff bottles which occupy a unique place in the rich tapestry of Chinese art history, and have captivated people and collectors around the world.

Dennis Lee will introduce these tiny technological and artistic wonders developed during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), representing a microcosm of the artistic achievements of that period.  These small flasks, made to carry scented, powdered tobacco for snuffing, were uniquely designed to be held in the palm of one’s hand.  While purposeful, they are also both visually and tactilely appealing.  The makers of these snuff bottles displayed incredible craftsmanship as they drew from China’s wealth of uninterrupted artistic traditions in using a variety of materials, techniques, and styles to produce miniature masterpieces.   ​
