The Scholar’s Retreat:

Over the last year we’ve lived through one of the most chaotic periods in over a century, a time marked by social
unrest, political violence and turmoil, devastating natural disasters, and a global pandemic that has changed the way
we live, work and interact. In this period of stress and in part due the isolation caused by social distancing, many of us have turned to our gardens for comfort, peace, and inspiration.
The withdrawal into nature and the garden during times of trouble is a time-honored theme in Chinese art and literature, rooted in Confucian belief in the edifying power of nature for the moral and ethical man. Come with
First Saturday PDX as Dr Ann Wetherell explores the ways in which landscape painting and gardens during the late Yuan
and Ming dynasties (roughly late 13th c- mid 17th c) reflect the ideal of a retreat—both physical and psychological—of the Confucian scholar from the turmoil of the world. Paintings of an ancestral retreat within a tumultuous mountain range, a rustic pavilion in a sparse landscape, or a close view of garden plants can express themes of loss, resilience, renewal, and hope for better times.

Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC. The collection is digitized - photos can be downloaded and studied closely. Also included is the link to the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History, which has excellent essays about periods and special topics.
The Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City has a superb collection of Chinese paintings, including a painting by the 5 Dynasties master Li Cheng, arguably the most important early landscape in a US collection.
The Cleveland Museum of Art:
Freer-Sackler Collection of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution. The Freer has a good collection of later Chinese painting, but sometimes poor images. Details can be downloaded but not always the entire work of art.
National Palace Museum, Taipei. The NPM collection was originally the core of the Imperial Palace Collection in Beijing. Before the communist victory in 1949, the most important pieces were removed and shipped across the country in rail cars, to be taken by the Nationalist government to Taiwan. This is the most important collection in the world.

About the speaker:
Ann Wetherell holds a Ph.D. in Chinese art history from the University of Oregon. Her research areas include Ming dynasty painting, Buddhist art of the late Imperial period, and Chinese American history in Oregon. Recently retired, Dr Wetherell taught Asian and Western art history at Willamette University, Portland State University, University of Oregon, and Pacific University. |
