January 25, 2020 - 11 February, 2021 marks the Lunar Year of the Golden Metal Rat. This commences with the Spring Festival on the 25th of January culminating with the Lantern Festival on the 8th of February. (Worth noting is the Lantern Viewing at Lan Su Garden 6 - 9th February)

Spring Festival is the most festive holiday of the year, as a time to be with family and friends; to cook and enjoy food together. In welcoming in the Lunar New Year, one's home is cleaned and decorated with poetic verses and red lanterns, with the colour red prominent. Outstanding debts are paid off and gold 金 and money 錢 are distributed to employees and younger relatives in the form of red envelopes "hong bao".

As a highly perceptive animal that can sense its environment and know when to act, the Rat 鼠 is one of the Chinese zodiac’s most auspicious signs - viewed as a sign for wealth and surplus. Being yang this year, the Rat represents the beginning of a new day. As the first of the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of the Rat is also anticipated to set the pace and direction for the remaining years of the cycle. Hence, our actions in 2020 are especially significant.
Yang Metal is linked to the sword, the axe, and strong wind – with rigidity, persistence and strength. It is indicative of a year of great determination in developing goals and aspirations and then their execution. It will also be a year of discovery and innovation, with plenty of creative energy – good for entrepreneurs.
We thank our generous speakers, valued volunteers and loyal and new attendees, wishing all a fulfilling new year with Good Fortune, Prosperity, Good Health, Longevity, Happiness, Success, Kindness, and Adventure !
